File Preparation Guide

Three essential steps to a print-ready silver foil file.

Create a Vector File

Prepare every area to be foiled (logo, text, lines) as vectors in Adobe Illustrator or InDesign. Raster formats like JPEG or PNG soften edge crispness, and in foil printing every pixel shows.

Add a Separate Foil Layer

Move the elements to be foiled onto a separate layer and name it 'Silver Foil'. Set the spot color to 100% fill in CMYK mode. If there is text, apply 'Create Outlines'. Save the file with the '_FOIL_PLATE' suffix.

Run a File Check

Don't use transparency, effects, or halftones on the foil layer — the press only processes flat vector areas. For thin lines, a minimum thickness of 0.25 pt is recommended. All dimensions should be saved at the actual print size with a 3 mm bleed.

Transparent Cards with Silver Foil

Silver foil on a clear PVC base creates an entirely different optical depth than traditional paper cards. Objects and hands behind the transparent card show through beneath the silver foil — which makes the card feel almost like an accessory. On a transparent base, the holographic silver option produces an almost living effect under light.

Apply the silver foil to the back surface for an 'embedded' metallic feel — when the card is held from the front, the foil layer shows through the transparent material.
Avoid large foil areas on a transparent base; thin lines, logos, and single lines of text give the cleanest result.
Pairing silver foil with black or dark ink printing delivers the highest contrast on a transparent card.

With silver foil stamping, genuine metallic foil is bonded using heat and pressure. Yes, it's technically possible, but it takes a careful hand. Two different metallic tones in the same design can create too much visual noise. Applied at the right density in a professional printing environment, silver foil is extremely durable. Foil on a transparent PVC card is better protected than on a paper card, because PVC is resistant to water and moisture. Fading or scratching of the foil surface is very rare in normal use. Prolonged direct exposure to sunlight should be avoided.

Prepare your logo in a vector format (AI or PDF). Mark the areas to be foiled on a separate 'Silver Foil' layer using a 100% fill spot color. The edges of the logo should be clean vectors; keep a minimum line thickness of 0.25 pt for fine details. When sending us the file, please provide both the main design file and the foil layer file as separate PDFs.
